Since Sean was working in Victoria we decided to stick around for the weekend and celebrate our 3yr wedding anniversary a few days early.
The weather was fantastic, so we spent a lot of time strolling the streets downtown and eating some delicious food at Rebar *yum*. We also had a chance to check out "Up" at a theater up the road (so great!), and play some pool at the nearby Billiard Hall. Oh yes, and we mustn't forget the old time Ice Cream Parlor that set up shop downtown.. so yummy.

We also had a great day checking out Miniature World, the "Church & State" winery, the Butterfly Gardens, and the famous (and expensive) Buchart Gardens. I loved the Butterflies!!

Now we're back home, getting into the swing of things. I must get back to bootcamp.. feeling so sluggish and yucky lately - it's been a month since I've been there(encouragement encouraged).

Things have been a bit wonky around here lately as our landlords are trying to sell the house, and we need to keep our apartment in a constant state of perfection so the realtor can show the place a few times a week. It's very frustrating.. especially not even knowing if the eventual buyers will want to keep us as tenants.

Weekend in Victoria )

I hope everybody had a good Canada Day!!

Sean's been working in Victoria for the past couple of weeks so I decided to join him for a few days so we can celebrate our 3yr wedding anniversary a few days early. We've been regulars at Rebar for a few days now. I'm hoping to go for a llama hike tomorrow, but I'm waiting for them to call back. That's right; I said Llama hike. If not, we might try our luck at whale watching. Have you ever done it? What's the likelihood of sea-sickness?

One of the pubs here sells my new favorite summer beverage, it's nearly impossible to find at the liquor stores because it keeps selling out...

I'm feeling snarky about this whole Michael Jackson thing...

The news about Farrah is getting put on the back burner - and c'mon - she was gorgeous and talented to boot.

I dunno... I don't have cable so I have no idea how this is being handled on your tv sets right now. Yes, Michael was extremely talented as a child, and in the 80's/early 90's. He has some of the greatest music videos, excellent songs, and he could dance. "PYT" is one of my favorite songs out there.

But lets face it - we - as a general public - have been on his case for the past 15 or so years. He went a bit loony there... It's not really one of those situations where he died young and at his peak.

BUT yes, one of the great music icons has left us. And so Michael, ease on down...

I love my friends, and I miss many of them being on the West Coast. Granted, most of them are all over the world too, so it doesn't matter where I am - but this week has been a healthy reminder of forever friends (however cheesy that sounds).

Just to lighten the mood for a second, I'm obsessed with these shoes.

You may think this is a repeat from two posts ago, but sadly it isn't.

Early yesterday morning I got the news that another Dad had passed away, this time very suddenly. Whit was the father of two of my best childhood friends, and like Arno they lived a few doors down from me. It breaks my heart that he had to leave so quickly, with no warning and no proper goodbyes. I spent pretty much everyday of my childhood/early teens at their door. Every morning and every lunch hour to get a drive to school, and many days/nights playing with Ann and Amy.

Lisa remembers the sound of Whit yelling at the girls when we'd be standing in the front porch waiting for them. It's so true.. it's a sound etched in my brain.
Whit was awesome, he'd tell cheesy jokes all the time, or yell at the twins for fighting and he always ALWAYS called my "Little Julie Andrews". In fact, he was still calling me that at my wedding reception.

I've got a lot of memories of Whit, like sneaking into the shed to see his latest hunting catch - morbidly hoping there would be a big deer hanging there to scare us. Or the times we'd get a drive home in the back of the police cruiser, and we were young enough that it was super cool, and then when we were in those awkward 12/13 years and it was the most embarrassing moments of our lives (I think he loved that part).

My heart goes out to the entire family.

Cheers Whit, I hope you're relaxing with a brew.

Our house looks over a fairly major street. Well actually, it's pretty busy during peak hours of the day but otherwise it's low-key. So during peak hours there are a number of cars lining up at the stop-light. My work space overlooks the road so I usually drift off and watch people in their cars. People do all kinds of things while they're driving, it's disturbing. Putting on make-up, eating, talking on the phone, texting, singing loudly, arguing.. it's great people watching.

Music in cars is typical - from Top 40 (Jai ho) has been especially popular, and then of course the ridiculously loud bass/hip hop. BUT over the past 7 days I've had two great drive-by musical experiences. First a blasting "It's My Life" by Talk Talk (the real version), and the other was a guy BLARING "Don't you Forget about Me" by Simple Minds. There's nothing like hearing this song fade in and out of your life to wake you up for second and make you laugh. In both instances the entire 1980's flashed before my eyes.

So to brighten my evening and hopefully yours:

A family friend passed away today. Someone who was an integral part of my life growing up, and I don't think I ever really thought about it until today. He was the father of one of my childhood friends, but not only did I get to know him while playing with barbies, or playing the "Ducktales" computer game at his house, but in many other community activities. His son was in the local choir with me and he volunteered hours with us for fundraisers, practices, and chaperoning trips - he saw me and 40 other local kids sing at Carnegie Hall, in fact he brought his video-camera along and made the Choir Video Keepsake. Then there were the summers that he was my soccer coach, and the many practices and games that he was at, yelling at us from the sidelines. I don't know how many times I spent driving to and from the field in his van since he lived a few houses up from mine. Eventually we all grew up, friendships drifted, people moved, and I didn't see him nearly as often.

The last time I saw him was less than a year ago. He was in a play with my Brother in Halifax. He and my Brother had reconnected and developed a really good friendship while rehearsing. When I went to the play he was so happy to see me and the rest of my family, and it was good seeing him. He was really happy that night.

I can't imagine what my friend and her family is going through right now, but I do know that they have many many people thinking of them, and remembering her father.

He'll be missed.

I very much enjoyed catching up with friends last night at Earl's!
The 3oz Viva Diva Martini's were quite scrumptious as well.. although the only thing wrong with a 3 oz martini is you have to limit yourself pretty much to 2. You can't really prolong a night of merriment with 2 drinks.. maybe I should ask for 6x 1oz martini's next time.

I've been reading some of the Canada Reads 2009 Books for a little while. I started with Gil Adamson's "The Outlander" (3rd place); then moved on to Brian Francis' "Fruit" (2nd place), and now I'm finally reading (and can't put down), Lawrence Hill's "The Book of Negroes". I'll post my thoughts on all three once I've finished the current one... So Good.

My sister called me this evening because she's home visiting with our family.
The day was going well - nothing out of the ordinary, my brother and his family came over so everyone was hanging out. My sister is playing with our nieces, it's a nice day out so they're walking around the backyard. My Dad and my oldest niece are walking around the shed when they found a tiny little perfect Blue robin's egg on the ground. My niece was pretty curious so my Dad explained all about bird's eggs and nature etc. and they took the blue egg back to the house and placed it on the kitchen windowsill.
Time passes and the family are all hanging out, chatting in the living room. My Mom is holding my new baby niece, and takes her into the kitchen for a second - having completely missed the story about the robin's egg - Mom's eye catches a lone left-over Easter treat placed on the window-sill. It's curious really, how this one irregular-sized blue mini-egg was forgotten. . .

I'm not even kidding here folks..

Next thing you know everyone in the living room hears Mom start to laugh and she's walking into the room with a baby in one arm and yellow yolk running down her other arm. My mother tried to eat the poor little robin's egg.

The laughter that erupted from the room probably could have fueled a small city. Sean's pretty sure he would have peed his pants if he was there in person.

There are plenty of times during the year that I miss being home, or miss seeing my family, BUT THIS takes the cake. Why, oh why, could I not have been home tonight with my parents, siblings, sister-in-law, and nieces?

At least I get to relive it here...
